Raiatea, appelée Havai'i dans les temps anciens: "grande eau jaillissante"
RAIATEA est considérée par les anciens polynésiens comme le berceau de leur civilisation millénaire. Ce fut cette île qu'ils choisirent en premier pour s'installer, il y a plus de 1000 ans. RAIATEA fut dans l'ancienne Polynésie le centre religieux et politique et le marae Taputapuatua est le plus vaste et le plus important de toute la Polynésie française. La tradition orale rapporte que c'est de la rivière Faaroa (la seule rivière navigable de toute la Polynésie) que commencèrent les grandes migrations vers Hawaii et la Nouvelle Zélande. Le premier roi de RAIATEA aurait été le dieu HIRO qui aurait construit les grandes pirogues qui effectuèrent la traversée vers Rarotonga et Aotearoa, ancien nom de la Nouvelle Zélande.
Située à 220 km de TAHITI, RAIATEA est la plus grande des îles Sous-le-Vent. Enfermée avec TAHA'A sa voisine, dans le même anneau corallien, les 170 km2 de surperficie sont habités par 10000 habitants et UTUROA est, après PAPEETE, le deuxième pôle urbain et économique du territoire.
Le mont TEFATUA culmine à une altitude de 1017 m. Une route traversière remonte la vallée de la FAAROA, franchit un petit col et descend jusqu'à la baie de FAATEMU. Une route côtière cerne l'île. Quelques tronçons dans la partie sud de l'île ne sont pas goudronnés mais sont praticables en voiture. Il n'y a aucune plage et pour le farniente et la baignade, il faudra aller en bateau sur un des nombreux motu.

RAIATEA is considered by ancient Polynesians to be the cradle of their thousand-year-old civilization. It was on this island that they chose first to settle, more than a 1000 years ago. RAIATEA in ancient Polynesia was the main religious and political centre and the Taputapuatua marae is up to this day the largest and most significant of all of French Polynesia. It is said that it is from the Faaroa river (the only navigable river of all of Polynesia) that started the great migrations towards Hawaii and New Zealand. The first king of RAIATEA would have been the god HIRO who would have built the largest dugouts for the crossing towards Rarotonga and Aotearoa, ancient name of New Zealand.
Located 220 km from TAHITI, RAIATEA is the largest of the windward islands.
Enclosed with TAHA'A its neighbor island, within the same coral ring, its 170
km2 (66 square miles) are inhabited by 10000 inhabitants and UTUROA is, after PAPEETE, the second economic urban pole of the territory.
Mount TEFATUA culminates at an altitude of 1017 m (3,333 ft). A cross road goes up the FAAROA valley , crosses a small peack and goes all the way down to FAATEMU bay. A coastal road encircles the island. Some road sections in the southern part of the island are not tarred but are in good condition to drive a car. There are no beaches, so for swimming and sun bathing it will be necessary to go by boat on one of the many quiet and lovely surrounding motu.
